The guitar - death and resurrection
The sound artist Lee Riley says, "I am interested in how we understand musical instruments. I enjoy taking them away from tradition by altering our perception of how they sound.”
In his performance piece Guitar Drag he certainly expands the already extensive range of sounds expected to emerge from the guitar, by adding the noise of smashing and splintering to the usual aural mix.
Of course, The Who got there first, some half a century ago. But Lee has a more classical approach to the task of destroying a musical instrument - by exploiting the accoustic delicacy, not to say
vulnerability, of the Spanish guitar.
And, after event, he takes his act of destruction a stage further by meticulously gathering each piece of the wreckage he has created and gluing all the fragments together. Thus he can repeat the action once more, on another location.
